Get Over Yourself.... We're Only Disabled

Chapter 15

Girls can wear high heels, even in wheelchairs!

Yes, you read the title correctly, girls can wear high heels even in wheelchairs!  People are always telling people in wheelchairs that they need to wear “appropriate footwear” to support them when they are in their wheelchairs or other equipment.  This is correct, however, when girls go out people should be a little more relaxed when it comes to the individual choosing the footwear they want to wear and what makes them feel like a women, not just “the girl in the wheelchair.”

Girls should be given a choice when it comes to footwear.  When people go out they want to look nice and be like other girls of a similar age to them.  If girls want to dress up and wear high heels, this is what they want to do and the people who are caring for them should allow this.  At the end of day, it is up to the individual whether they feel comfortable and how they want to look.

High heels and shoes that may seem out of ‘normality’ may be frowned upon by people who are caring for them.  I know that the suitability of heels and flip flops is questioned for feet but if it’s only for a one off it is okay.

I know that in high heels I find it difficult to do any transferring to and from chairs but I like wearing shoes that may not be suitable for everyday wear.  I know that people with a disability can have different issues with their feet and may require special footwear, however, for every so often it is nice for them to have a change and wear something the person likes to wear rather than have to wear a specific footwear.

It’s not just about high heels, people can wear any footwear of their choice within reason that makes them feel happy and help them to feel like people around them.  It’s about giving them choice and freedom to be able to understand that they can have their own say in what they want to wear.

Sometimes people need to wear shoes such as Pedro boots that support them with their therapies. These are great when they are doing physio or need their feet stretched but sometimes it is nice to have a break from them then they will be rested enough to put them back on.  In recent years Pedro boots have become a lot more stylish and can come in different colours and people can choose what is best for them.

I feel that any shoes whether its high heels, trainers, sandals, boots or flip-flops are good when people want to wear something nicer than what they would normally wear.  The only concern would be if their feet was starting to become painful or if the footwear was causing harm to their feet.  But the individual or the person that is caring for them can make that decision.

Coming back to the title, girls can wear different types of footwear if they want to and this is the same for girls in wheelchairs!
