Get Over Yourself ..... We're Only Disabled! Part 16

Get Over Yourself ... We're Only Disabled!

Hey my lovely readers, hope you are well.

Chapter 16

 Don’t ignore non-verbal people

People shouldn't ignore individuals that cannot communicate as everyone is as important as each other and even if they cannot speak, they may be able to communicate in other ways such as, communication aids and devices, pictures, sign language, eye and hand movements or even just making their own personal noise to let people how they are feeling or if they require something or even just to have a conversation with somebody.  Just saying hello to someone in their way is just as special and important as everything else they need to say.

Whatever people use to get their message across, the people who are supporting the individual need to be patient with them because they may take a lot longer to get their message across because of the pace they may need.  So the person needs to respect what they are trying to say in their own unique way.  Don't just ignore them and people should give it a go to work out what they are trying to get across to them.

I think people just try to find out what the person wants or needs and sometimes they can't see that the person might just want to have a chat.  However, this can all come with time and people getting to know the individual person.  Non-verbal can mean different levels of speech, some people may have a limited way of getting themselves heard but others may have no voice at all.  But having no voice doesn't mean they won't have nothing to say.  People should support them to be able to feel confident and happy to use their device to be able to communicate with people.

When people aren't able to communicate through speaking, this may take them a while longer than others to be able get their message across.  They may need to type it out on their communication device or use something that will support them to speak.  People around them shouldn't ignore their efforts, and should make sure they wait for them to say their message. This is because everything people say is important and if somebody misses out on a piece of important information, this could cause a lot of trouble and worry for the person.  It isn't their fault that they cannot speak so don't ignore or make fun of them when they have something to say using their means of communicating.

People should help individuals that cannot communicate to feel that they can be as unique as they want to be when trying to communicate.  Supporting and encouraging the individual when using their device or means of communicating will support them to feel determined to use to communication aid to be able to say what they want.

We wouldn't ignore people that can speak so why ignore people that cannot?   §`§§§§ak.  It would just be unfair and rude to ignore people just because they cannot speak.  It is a fair world, so don't make people suffer in silence!
